I’ve talked a lot about using technology to keep yourself connected with your long distance partner. If you’re anything like me, you’ve got your phone with you 24/7. These applications were made exclusively for long distance couples like yourself. In order to help you guys make your LDR’s slightly easier, I put together a list of our favourites. Popular applications like Snapchat, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Oovoo, and Instagram are still very useful during your LDR season, but our list is designed especially for couples.
Avocado: Avocado is a cute app just for you two. It acts as a social media app where you can share messages and pictures. I think my favorite part of this app is that it is inspired by an avocado tree. I didn’t know this but an avocado tree only produces fruit when there is another tree nearby which is adorable in my opinion. Another part about this app is that it archives everything so you can track your relationship as it progresses. Applications like this are nice especially for couples that live in different countries that don’t want to spend a billion dollars on data and messaging fees.
Couple: Couple is kind of like Avocado but I personally like this one better. It’s a social media app just for you two. You can message back and forth, send pictures, voice messages, games, and even draw pictures. But trust me it gets better. They’ve got this thing called a “ThumbKiss”. Yes, it is as cute as it sounds. Basically what happens is when both of you are in the app you can touch it with your thumb and if your partner is doing the same your phone will vibrate a bit which is absolutely adorable. Probably the application that I want to try the most from this list.
Love Quiz!: The title is pretty self explainitory. It’s designed as a “how well do you know me” game that you can play together from anywhere in the world. For each question, the first person answers. The second person then has to guess what the first person answered and then it switches. In this app you test how well you know each other and even learn some more about each other. Apple
Long Distance: This app keeps track of your long distance relationship. One downfall is that it does cost $0.99 cents (US) / $1.19 (CAN) on the app store but some of the features of this app are that you can count down the hours until you get to see them again which I find very cool. Especially when one of the tips I often suggest is to set a date in the future. It also, gives you quotes on long distance relationships and features blogs that features long distance relationships. You can also customize your home screen of the app with pictures and set up ways to quickly call or text your significant other. Apple
Noddler: This app is pretty silly but I think it’s really cute and cool. Basically what happens is that instead of like a lot of applications where you send messages, here you send actions. First you choose your contact, then you set an action and shake your phone. Whoever you sent the action to immediately will see what you are doing to them in a notification. The actions can be as silly as throwing a pie at someone to as cute as kissing someone. Apple
Touch Room: This app is pretty simple but I still think it is really cool. Applications like this shows how far technology has come. All this app does is lets you touch someone even in the distance. I wouldn’t say that it would be entertaining for long periods of time but if you want that simple connection for you and your partner this is a good app for the two of you. When the both of you are in a room together you can see two blue dots representing both of your fingers. When the blue dots come together they turn orange and make your phones vibrate, virtually touching each other. Kind of like the Couple application but not as elaborate. Apple
Between: Another social media application like Couple and Avocado. It is a private space just for you and your partner. You can share messages, pictures, and even send weather updates to the other person. It visually shows the person what the weather looks like by them. Android | Apple
BeenTogether: I personally use BeenTogether. It is an app that counts how many days you’ve been together. You can have it count the days by amount or you can set it so it counts it by years, months, and days. You can customize basically everything from the pictures, to the names, and even the heart that is shown to connect the both of you. Then on your home screen it shows you how many days you’ve been together in the little bubble above the application for a quick look at how long it’s been. Another feature is that you can set little reminders when you hit milestones in your relationship. When you hit that milestone you get a notification and within the application it makes little fireworks over your pictures which is pretty cute. Android | Apple
Kayak: This is a wonderful app which allows you to compare flight and hotel deals to find the best price. With a simple design and easy to read format, this is a must have for travelling LDR couples. Android | Apple
The majority of these apps are free unless stated in their description. Do you have an app that you love to use with your long distance lover? Comment with your favourite!
