Starting in the 2017-2018 NHL season, the expansion team, the Vegas Golden Knights made their debut in the National Hockey League world. With a record of 16-9-1 with 33 points and coming in 2nd place in the Western Conference (as of 12/5/17), the Vegas Golden Knights have shown that with a good bit of talent and hard work, being an expansion team doesn’t mean they can’t be the best. Possible Stanley Cup? Maybe. I personally think they’ll at least make it to the playoffs.
The last NHL expansion was back in 2000 when the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild became the newest additions to the league. Now there’s talk about yet another team that could possibly be expanded into the NHL. Although it has not fully been confirmed yet, Seattle could be landing an NHL and/or an NBA team. It’s city council voted 7-1 in favor of a $660 Million plan to get an arena ready to play both sports. There’s also a chance of another team relocating to Seattle – the two more likely teams for the relocation would probably be either Arizona or Calgary.
The plan is to have an arena built by October of 2020. Which obviously the beginning of hockey season is October so the timing is perfect for the NHL. With the Vancouver Canucks being so close, it’s almost certain that’s who their rivalry will be.
But let’s not get our hopes up. Remember back in 2006 when Kansas City built their new arena and they were going to get the Pittsburgh Penguins? Look how well that worked out for them. Besides, Kansas City Penguins doesn’t even sound cool.
According to NBC Sports, if Seattle wants to submit an application to be a part of the NHL, they’ll need to hand over $650 Million. Gary Bettman, also announced that Seattle will be the only team able to submit an expansion application for now. Sounds like bad news for Quebec City who’s been dying to get a NHL team. Quebec City is much like the term “fetch,” it’s never going to happen.
Looks like we’ll find out in the coming months if the NHL will expand to 32 teams. If we do get a team in Seattle, can we call them the Seattle Sasquatch and have Brent Burns play for them? Seems only fitting.
